Chronic Pain Management
and Mental Health

chronic Pain and mental health disorders
Often Occur Together

Picture
There is an estimated 50 million Americans who struggle from chronic pain, the kind that can be devastating to a person's life. If you have been struggling with chronic pain, you know that it is more than just physical. Chronic pain can be life altering, causing you miss out on time spent with family and friends. It can also impact how you function, creating stress about not being able to perform at your best, along with the fear of hostile feelings people sometimes have towards a condition they cannot see or understand.
People living with chronic pain are at a much greater risk for depression and anxiety.  An estimated 35% to 45% of people struggling with chronic pain experience depression. Anxiety is also a common symptom that occurs with chronic pain. Symptoms of fibromyalgia, back problems, arthritis, and migraines are frequently worsened when you have anxiety and depression.
Research has shown that mental health disorders and chronic pain share biological mechanisms which contribute to the interconnection. Research also shows that individuals that had long-term chronic pain suffered were more likely to have several mental health conditions including severe anxiety, severe depression, bipolar and PTSD.

When dealing with chronic pain, treating both the physical and mental symptoms is crucial. Some treatments and approaches may help both mental and pain conditions through psychotherapy and relaxation techniques. Antidepressants and other medications can also be useful in treating both conditions. In addition, lifestyle changes such as exercise, better nutrition, and sufficient sleep can be helpful in managing chronic pain and will improve your mental health.
